History

Tweed Leader Jed Track (TLJT) as a club was formed in April 2009 and became affiliated to Scottish Athletics at the same time. It became an accredited club with SAF in 2012.

The foundation for TLJT extends back into the 1970’s when a number of local athletes were members of Jock Steede’s school; in this case being schooled in the art of running or pedestrianism to give it it’s Sunday name. The ‘club’ was informal but as a group had a number of successes through the 1970’s and 1980’s with our own Head Coach Bruce Scott winning the Jedforest Sprint Handicap in 1982 as well as others under the watchful eye of TLJT Club President John Steede. The school notched up many significant wins through the 1980’s including the club’s first new year sprint winner in Tommy Finkle in 1989 at Meadowbank.

In the early 1990’s the school started to use the name ‘Jed Track’ and this continued through to 2009 with the formation of the new club. The club continued to win large numbers of races throughout the Scottish Highland Games and Border Games circuits with +70 wins in a year not uncommon and many of our athletes holding various Scottish Professional Championships from 80m to 400m.

In 2009 ‘Tweed Leader’ was added to mark the significant group of athletes from the Earlston area within the club and the use of Tweedbank as one of its main tracks; the club continues to still have a large presence in Jedburgh and has produced recent Jedforest Sprint Winners Terry Marshall and Craig Gillan as well as numerous other finalists.
