Run Jump Throw (Age 7-11)
This is the most important part of our journey and is very much fun based for the young athletes. Athletes who join at age 7 will have five years to develop all the underpinning movements that we see in all our sports. The coaches have the very difficult task of introducing all those moves within a fun type session. The young athletes are given various tasks to do which include all of the above. This is mixed with games that include running, jumping and throwing.
Coaches introduce all the different track and field disciplines without too much emphasis on the technical side, giving more time to developing their movement skills. Our young athletes in this group will also be encouraged to participate in other activities away from our training sessions. This will serve them well in their development as each sport adds different skills, building up an extensive movement vocabulary. As they progress through this group they will hopefully earn the right to start work more on technical skills. This will help them when they come to transition through to the next level. At age 9 they should be ready to compete on the Border games circuit and make themselves available within the selection process for Team Borders.
