Saturday 5th August 2017 Four of our young athletes were selected to represent Team Borders today in the Forth Valley League President’s Select Match. Grace McWhinnie, Samantha Dagg, Finn Douglas and Kacey Taitt made the trip to Grangemouth Athletics Stadium for this fourth and final match of FVL. Sammy won gold in the 200m and bronze in the 100m and got PBs in both. There were also PBs for Finn and Kacey. Finn won gold in the 300m and Kacey gold in the Long Jump. Great running also from Grace in a tough U11 girls 200m. All ran in the relay and Finn was in the winning U15 boys team. TLJT Athletes and supporters packed their spikes, wellies and umbrellas and set off for the Castleholm at Langholm last Friday. Heavy rain the previous day meant that the car parking areas doubled as an extra side show, however there was just enough sunshine to make it a pleasant afternoon of spectating. Caris Brus dug deep to take the win in the 400m Open from clubmate Greg Turnbull. Caris was on a mark of 78 metres with Greg on 14 metres and the winning time was 50.97 seconds. Fraser Gorvett couldn’t hide his delight in winning the 1600m Open. Fraser was backmarker on 130m and won in a time of 4 minutes 34.4 seconds.

There have been firsts and various placings for Cameron Clamp and Lee Goodfellow who took to the Highlands for Rosneath Peninsula Games, Inverary Highland Games and Mull Highland Games.
The challenging weather didn’t dampen TLJT spirits on Saturday at Oxton Games. Head over to the Border Athletics page on Facebook to see the video footage of the grueling conditions. However nothing was stopping Sam Johnstone from taking his second win of the season when he gritted his teeth against the rain and rivals and took the tape in the Youths’ 800m. Well done Sam. Also undeterred by the wet conditions was Marshall Smith who won the 110m Open Sprint. Congratulations to Marshall.
Young Evie Renwick was the toast of TLJT at St Ronan’s Games on Saturday. Evie, who had been a finalist in the 90m at Jedburgh the previous week, was in great form at St Ronan’s. She won the Youth B 200m in style and is pictured receiving her trophy.

Sophie and Matthew Take Silver at Kelso The Border Athletics circuit moved to Poynder Park today for the latest Border Games Handicapped event. Again it was great to see so many blue and white TLJT vests take to the grass track. Lots of second places went our way today with some very close finishes. In the sprints, despite showing great determination, both Angus Bryce and Samantha Dagg had to be content with seconds. While in the Youth 800m, newcomer Ami-LeaTemple came tantalisingly close but was just edged out on the line by Thomas MacAskill of Hawick. Congratulations to our winners Matthew Beaton and Sophie Elder. Matthew won his heat in style and then from a mark of 20m took the Youth 9-12 years Final in 11.12 seconds. Sophie was the star of the 200m Open winning from 40m in a time of 22.05 seconds. For full results from Kelso go to http://www.bordersathletics.co.uk/ And so next week to Jedburgh’s Riverside for the 164th running of the Jedburgh Border Games.
